Kevin Hegge’s energizing portrait of the all-female punk band Fifth Column is a trip to the ‘80s and back again, heralding the group’s widespread influence in music, zine and film culture, and the near-eclipsing birth of the riot grrrl movement. Interviews with Caroline Azar, Beverly Breckenridge, GB Jones, and fellow queercore provocateur Bruce La Bruce recall a time of astute rebellion in the face of conventional ideas around femininity, gender expression and art-making. Their wild “fuck you” was aimed, in part, at pop music’s tinny vapid commercialism but also blasted open a place for women in the macho arenas of punk expression. Hegge’s upbeat, busting documentary doesn’t shy away from nostalgia or bitterness, and remains brightly alive with the hopeful anything-goes spirit that emanates from the legacy of Fifth Column.
