At the centre of Celebrate Queer Vancouver is a series of public art plaques created to engage and celebrate the dynamic experiences and achievements of Vancouver's queer communities.
The Vancouver Queer Film Festival is thrilled to step out of its role of being strictly an indoor, ticketed arts presenter and to present public art for the first time.
Each one of our eight lamppost installations include a Chosen Family Portrait image, personal quote culled from the featured family's testimonial, and a queer historical fact about the dynamic city we live in. We hope these lampposts bring greater queer visibility to the streets of Vancouver—in particular the neighbourhoods of the Westend, Davie Village, Commercial Drive and Chinatown—and introduce many Vancouverites to local queer families and history. With a legacy of upward of five years, these lamppost installations ensure that we have a queer public presence for years to come.
The artists we've partnered with are Michael Vandermeer and Cheryl Hamilton the two artistic collaborators of ie. creative, a Vancouver-based art studio that specializes in Public Art. They have combined their art practice for the last 17 years to produce Public Art Installations across North America
