Premiering at the 22nd Annual Vancouver Queer Film Festival on August 16, Riffs on the Theme of Activism marks the finale of the celebrated Queer History Project film series. What better way to celebrate than to invite six new artists to share our stories? Debora O, David C Jones, Gwen Haworth, Byron Chief Moon, Joe Average and Jamie Griffiths bring you five short films that speak to Vancouver’s long and courageous history of queer activism. From AIDS awareness to urban gardening, unsung heroes to local leaders, activism is broadly interpreted and portrayed in this premiere Queer History Project screening.
Join the Queer History Project directors in an artists-in-conversation style Q&A hosted by animateur, Sean George.
Monday | August 16 | 7:00 pm | Cinemark Tinseltown Theatres
Previously commissioned films include:
- The Love That Won’t Shut Up by Ivan E Coyote and Veda Hille (2007)
- Rex vs. Singh by John Greyson, Richard Fung and Ali Kazimi (2008)
- The Portside by Daphne Marlatt and Aerlyn Weissman (2009)
In 2011, we plan for the body of work to screen together in a Queer History Celebration coinciding with Vancouver’s 125th anniversary. Part of this exhibition will include the Chosen Family Portraits public art installation, created by Artist-in-Residence, photographer Sarah Race.
