Two Homelands depicts the lives of six cubans – five gay men and one trans woman – who provide a rare view into queer communities existing in this closed, and often misunderstood, culture.
Filming was completed under the radar in Cuba, in people’s homes, at illegal gay parties (fiestas particulares) and along the waterfront of Havana, which acts as both meeting place and street theatre. Together these public spaces create an underground: the world of the night. The poems of exiled gay Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas are juxtaposed with each subject and act as reference points that link the various stories together.
The way of life for queer people in present-day Cuba is explored with balance; queer communities, while still marginalized and at times persecuted, see hope for the future as acceptance grows and widespread cultural change is on the horizon. The portrait of cuba painted here is a realistic one that is neither romanticized nor demonized. it is a brilliantly nuanced film.
